Chequers

If anyone ever asked me to name one of my favorite days of hiking, the hike from Watlington to Wendover would surely not be mentioned.  The first 3/4 of the hike was mainly woods walks, road walks, and stony path walks between barbed wire fences in front of already harvested fields.

The last 25% was more interesting, but also very difficult with many steep climbs and descents, including a climb up what seemed to be an endless set of steps.  We did the 19 miles in 8 hours between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Today must have been National Walk Your Dog day as the dog walkers were out in force.  As usual, the British dogs were perfectly behaved and ran right by us without even a glance.

What made the end of the day interesting was walking through the grounds of Chequers.  This is a 16th century house used as a country home for the sitting Prime Minister since 1921.

This is the back of the security gate. The trail crosses the driveway right behind it.

Just after Chequers, there is a steep climb which gets you to the top of Coombe Hill and spectacular views.
